Avoiding Societal "Norms"

Have you ever been held back by judgmental people? Their comments may sound something like, "There's no way you can make a living as an artist" or "That's dumb. You should really consider something else." If you've had an unpleasant interaction of the sort, you're encouraged to read on.

Constructive criticism is something we should embrace, as we’ve been told all throughout our developmental years. I agree. It allows us to view our work from a different perspective, adding or subtracting to it based off of the feedback given. Criticism can be quite the catalyst if given correctly, and embraced fully.

Harsh criticism on the other hand is a deterrent for anyone, especially if it’s coming from a friend or a loved one. We give these people a say in how we conduct our lives. We trust them. So when they say “you’re not going to make it” we really feel it. That criticism has now turned into a roadblock, but it doesn’t have to remain that way.

Working outside of the box can be one of the most rewarding adventures. Not only does it give you complete artistic freedom, but it gives you a platform like no other. Think about it. If you’re confined between four walls with the rest of your peers, it’s very likely that you all have similarities in your work. There’s no separation. Now venture outside of that box and there’s an endless amount of inspiration surrounding you. It’s a simple concept but can be hard for us to grasp. Humans are known for wanting to fit in no matter what’s at stake.

It’s imperative that you choose your indiviualistic freedom over all else in regards to creativity. Societal norms deter us from our true potential, and your true potential is something wonderful!
